The all-mighty 2016 GT-R is here. But it looks like the same from last years. Is that true? Kind of. Nissan is not planning to greatly modify the Godzilla anytime soon. So, what can we expect from next year model? A few things in terms of driving improvement, perhaps.
The GT-R has been one most the most successful sports cars of the latter years. Why? Maybe its “low” cost and freakish performance are two really good causes. The Japanese maker could have plans to renew this model, but this isn’t happening next years.
Let’s see the main features of the 2016 GT-R.
The Same Engine, Meaty Improvements
The 2016 GT-R packs the exact same engine from past models. The legendary twin-turbo DOHC 3.8 L V6 remain under the Godzilla’s hood. Now, with the 2016 model, we get it tuned and highly optimized. Nissan does not spend a year without making curious tweaking.
In this setup, the 2016 GT-R is capable of producing 545 hp at 6400 RPM and 463 lb-ft of maximum torque at 3200 RPM. Despite performance tweaking, the fuel efficiency still the same, too. The maximum speed is around the 7000 RPM. This new model brings upgraded stability, mostly on the corners.
The highly improved handling is another feat, proof of remodeling what seems almost perfect and flawless. The enhanced ECU settings provide many perks when it comes about driving at high speeds.
Tires are also new. The recent Dunlop units offer more stability at top acceleration. Thanks to these and to the reinforced suspension, the driving quality do not decrease at any moment, even on irregular roads. Also, Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 600 DSST tires are available as optional.
The braking system renovation brings a noticeable reduction of the noise, along with more power and efficiency. With this minor tweaks and changes, Nissan is planning to launch an, even more, capable supercar on the track. The 2016 GT-R is, in fact, a Japanese 2015 GT-R version made for overseas markets. This could be seen insulting for many.
Finally, in numbers, we see the Godzilla going from standstill to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 3 seconds. The top speed goes up 196 mph (315 km/h).
Design Novelties?
When we see the 2016 GT-R exterior, there aren’t any noticeable changes about it. The Premium trim can get the revised Ray forged wheels as an optional, while the Black Edition includes them as standard, along minor body modifiers.
Inside the cockpit, the story is the same. The impressively sealed interior still the same. The cabin enjoys all the comfort features available last year. Obviously, tech toys onboard are updated, as a mandatory process every year that passes.
The suspension enhancements have a noteworthy effect on the cockpit. It became, even more, silent and quiet than before. Of course, the several driving modes available could change the situation for good.
The Bottom Line
The 2016 GT-R is almost the same supercar than the last year. Nissan knows how good the actual formula is. Rumors around Internet says that the Japanese maker is already working on a new model from the scratch. In the meanwhile, we should not expect major changes on design and specs.
The base price for the Premium trim starts at US$101.770. While the Black Edition and the NISMO have price tags starting at US$111.510 and 149.990 respectively.
The last two trims mentioned will offer the same body kit modifications from past models, mainly oriented to improving aerodynamics and create a more street racing-inspired look. The Ferrari-killer isn’t in lack of options.
